A custom screen greeting card plays video through a built-in LCD controller chip. Not every video file works. If your video is encoded wrong, the card shows a black screen, stutters or plays with no sound. Rophone engineers test every video file before burning it to the card. Here is exactly what format works and why.
All Rophone cards play MP4 (H.264) video. Some older controllers support AVI but we recommend MP4 exclusively. The H.264 codec gives the best quality per file size. We do not support MKV, MOV ProRes or HEVC because the LCD controller chip cannot decode them. If your client sends a ProRes or MOV file, our team transcodes it to H.264 MP4 before production.
Every screen size has a native resolution. 2.4 inch = 320x240, 4.3 inch = 480x272, 5 inch = 800x480, 7 inch = 1024x600, 10 inch = 1024x600. Your video must match the screen resolution exactly. A 1080p video on a 4.3 inch screen will be stretched or cropped. Rophone adjusts your video to the exact resolution and letterboxing before burning.
Cards have 128MB to 2GB of internal flash memory depending on screen size. A 30-second video at 480x272 takes about 15-20MB. A 2-minute video at 1024x600 takes about 80-120MB. We recommend keeping videos under 90 seconds for the best battery life and playback smoothness. See the full electronic greeting card range for memory options.
Bitrate controls video quality. Too low and the video looks blocky. Too high and the file overflows memory. Rophone uses 1500kbps for 480p and 2500kbps for 720p. This gives clean motion without wasting flash space. We always set the audio to AAC 128kbps stereo. The speaker on the card is small, but clear audio matters.
Before mass production, Rophone burns one sample card and plays it back. We check sync, color, audio level and full-length playback. The sample is approved by the customer before we burn 500 units. This prevents the common mistake of discovering a bad video after 1000 cards are already printed.
We accept video via WeTransfer, Google Drive or FTP. Send us the raw MP4 and we handle encoding, compression and resolution matching. Visit our custom screen greeting card page to start your video project.
